“This project was a response to the Gastown BIA’s desire that the artwork for the utility box at Columbia and Powell streets reflect the neighbourhood but without the stereotypes by which Gastown is often represented. The tree’s limbs and branches act as a metaphor for the winding streets that transition off into narrow lanes and passageways. The silhouetted figures are a response to the varied demographics of the people that live and work in the community. Gastown is a destination for those in the neighbourhoods to the west and the east while historically being from where the city was first conceived, planted and grew. “
